As far as utopias and technology are concerned, I believe technology is the thing that makes a utopian idea possible. While survival and peaceful coexistence aren't dependent on technology, utopia is (for me) an idea that offers a lot more than mere survival. I'm not really worried about the techno part of the equation. It's the human part that concerns me.

Fair enough. I think in a lot of ways high tech can enable the pastoral so I see no reason why they can't co-exist!
