Vengeful God of Israel and Technological Apocalypse of 21st century
The old vengeful God of Israel has had enough, ordering Israel, his chosen people, to unleash the electronic apocalypse and purge this world of all humans using electronics. (fiction, short story)
God descended from the heavens and spoke to his prophet
The heavens opened up, and God Yahve himself descended to speak to his prophet in prayer. It had been thousands of years since his last appearance, so the prophet was beside himself with joy—a joy that would prove to be shortlived, as God did not come in a good mood but one of lust for destruction, purification, and mayhem.
Prophet Netanyahu: “Oh Lord. Is that really you?”
God, Yahve: “I am that, I am.”
Prophet Netanyahu: “I am honored by your presence. To what do I owe this pleasure, oh Lord of Heavens and Earth?”
God, Yahve: “I have chosen you as my emissary of death.”
Prophet Netanyahu: “I’m sorry, what? My hearing isn’t what it used to be.”
God, Yahve: “Have you forgotten who you are speaking to, mortal?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “Forgive me! (he fell to his knees) I meant no disrespect.”
God, Yahve: “Yet that is all you produce in my name.”
Prophet Netanyahu: “I do not know what you mean. We are fighting in your name all the time. There is nothing we would not do for our Lord. How have we offended you, oh mighty God of Israel?”
God, Yahve: “You are a disappointment to me! You have failed me. You were my chosen people. I have done what I promised, yet you fail to do your part. I have given you the promised land, did I not?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “You have, oh Lord. You have! We have received it through the United Nations. We have suffered many casualties before, though. Millions have perished in horrible ways.”
God, Yahve: “Yes, I have tested your faith, and many have failed. Those who survived were purified as true believers. It was as I demanded!”
Prophet Netanyahu: “Why, oh why, did you want your people to suffer so greatly? What have we done to anger you so?”
God, Yahve: “Do you doubt me, oh little one?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “No! Never!”
God, Yahve: “Then ask no more questions and do as I command!”
Prophet Netanyahu: “Yes. As you command. Your word is Law. Thy will be done.”
God, Yahve: “You have failed to establish my kingdom. I see blasphemy everywhere. Other religions and their false gods are gaining a foothold in human hearts. I am sorely disappointed in your resolve to serve me!”
Prophet Netanyahu: “Forgive us! We know not what we do.”
God, Yahve: “That much is clear. Still, I see you have prepared the way for my triumphant return. Well done, oh faithful one.”
Prophet Netanyahu: “I did? We did? What did we do?”
God, Yahve: “You’ve given me the perfect weapon. One that only kills humans and allows other beings to live. They have always been innocent in our affairs. My heart is heavy with regret. You have given me options of selective retribution. For this, I will reward you!”
Prophet Netanyahu: “I thank you, oh Lord almighty. What would you have me do.”
God, Yahve: “It is time to punish those who oppose me. Thau shall be my staff, the instrument in my hand. This time, I shall not compel the sky to do my bidding. You will be the weapon of my wrath! Will you serve?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “I will serve. May I ask what is it that you demand of me, oh Lord?”
God, Yahve: “Press the button of doom and never look back!”
Prophet Netanyahu: “Lord? What button would that be? Just to make sure we’re talking about the right one.”
God, Yahve: “Do you think me a fool, puny human? Will you join the ranks of those who will enter the depths of hell tomorrow?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “Tomorrow? I don’t think we’re ready?”
God, Yahve: “You are ready. Who shall stop you, with God on your side?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “No one! I mean. I don’t think we can do this. We don’t have all the data necessary to know which electronic devices to ignite. Time will be needed for a successful execution of your will, oh Lord.”
God, Yahve: “Have you no faith? Do you not trust in my judgment?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “I do! Oh Lord, I do! I’m just telling you that we can’t discriminate between those faithful to you and those who have betrayed you. The Apocalypse scenario is ready to execute your will, but the targeting is not. We don’t have a complete list. We can’t select who lives and who dies. It’s not possible.”
God, Yahve: “Are you questioning your God?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “No, my Lord. I’m merely explaining the situation on the ground…”
God, Yahve: “How dare you!? Shall I strike you down where you stand and choose another to be my instrument of death?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “That won’t be necessary, Lord of Heavens. I shall serve and ask no further questions. Please allow me to make sure that I, mere mortal, your faithful servant, understand your command. I am to push the button, release the electronic apocalypse, and annihilate everyone who is using or is near any electronic device that has been tampered with. This is your will?”
God, Yahve: “Did I stutter? I have lost my patience with you! Will you serve as my weapon, or shall I smite thee where you stand?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “I will serve—no smiting necessary, oh Lord. I will never question you. Your will is my will. Do with me as you wish. I am here only to serve you, the all-mighty, all-knowing God of Heaven and Earth. I am yours to command!”
God, Yahve: “I have observed humanity and rendered my final judgment. All of modern society must go. They have forsaken me and have done despicable deeds. Sodoma and Gomora were nothing compared to what the world has turned into. It’s an abomination! I shall have none of that. I hath created you, and I shall destroy you, for I do not like what I see. I’m getting tired of this human experiment. Those who survive, and you had better make sure there aren’t many, will never be allowed to prosper and develop again. It is time for my other children to inherit this planet.”
Prophet Netanyahu: “Other children, my Lord?”
God, Yahve: “I have spoken. Do not disappoint me!”
And just like that, the Lord of Heavens has disappeared from whence he came. Now tasked with a terrible burden, the old prophet faced a heart-breaking dilemma. Shall he defy his God and suffer unimaginable consequences in this life and the next, or shall he be his instrument of death?
The tools were operational, but they were hardly surgical weapons to distinguish between those faithful to God and those who opposed him. He felt distraught that God would order him to murder most of the human population. His enemies, he understood, but everyone within the range of an electronic device? What he demanded was the death of billions in a matter of a few seconds. The time it took for the signal to reach the device. Most of them innocent of any crimes.
God’s chosen nation has been working tirelessly to gain access to all electronics manufacturers, from chip manufacturers and software developers to battery suppliers. This plan was decades in the making, and now was the appointed hour. What have they done?
On the one hand, the prophet Netanyahu was glad that God didn’t ask him to unleash his nuclear arsenal because then he feared a terrible blowback. He knew full well that there would be no repercussions after the Electronic Apocalypse of 2024.
No one will be left alive to fight back. We are all surrounded by electronic devices, not to mention cars, airplanes, trains, and energy plants. If the plan goes through without a flaw, human civilization will effectively end in one short moment and the press of a button.
“I must warn my people! My family! I must hurry,” he remembered. He needed to take them somewhere safe. But where was safe from this technological apocalypse? He remembered the bunkers where there were no electronics. He must take all of their electronics away. Nothing can get in—every single one must be left outside the safety of the bunkers!
In under twelve hours, all was ready to commence with the ultimate plan. The will of God shall be done! He did not doubt his Lord’s true intentions, for he knew the past well. He remembered how many times the good Lord had annihilated whole cities and burned them to the ground with everyone in them. He remembered the great flood, where God was so furious he decided to destroy all living beings because they breathed the same air as the people he didn’t like. When God was mad, everyone suffered.
He knew that his God was a vengeful God, but he never knew that he would be his instrument of death. Alas, here he was, in the bunker, and everyone they could warn about the coming hell was hopefully safe. Not all of them will make it, he knew. There just wasn’t enough time, but a broader warning would risk thwarting the plan. That was not an option, for God would not descend the Heavens twice and mince words. This time, he would come with a fiery sword, enraged, leveling the ground clean. The prophet loved his God, but at this moment, he feared him more.
He warned his brothers and sisters through their secret channels and gave them a deadline. Those who knew him didn’t doubt. Those who doubted will soon be dead anyway. He feared they would tell everyone else what was coming, but almost no one spoke. Those who did, no one believed. It sounded outlandish, like the craziest conspiracy theory imaginable. Yet, it was true.
He said his prayers for all to hear: “We are your proud servants, oh Lord of Heavens. We shall serve. Your will is our will. In you, we trust, oh Lord. We may not understand your reasons, but we are your favorite children and will be your instrument of divine justice. You have not yet failed us,” he said with bitterness regarding the Holocaust, “so we will never fail you!” Please forgive us for what we are about to do and see that all who love you are spared from your wrath.”
He pushed the button, and with a gentle click, it was done. Civilization had ended. The people in his bunker looked at each other and wondered if it worked. There was no TV, radio, or internet device to check the progress. No one dared go near one for fear of a delayed explosion. There were no sounds of explosions—only dreadful silence.
Besides, what would even survive the electronic onslaught they unleashed? They didn’t know. They were left in the dark, with only their faith to console them. They stayed in that bunker for a few weeks, fearing to stick their heads out and realize the full scale of their action.
They feared what the world had become. They feared being judged for what they had done. They feared that it had worked as planned with devastating consequences. The blood on their hands was immeasurable. They also worried it had not worked, but people discovered what they were attempting. Staying in silence, fasting out of sorrow for the fallen ones, they prayed to their God for salvation. Oh, how they preyed and wept.
After a few months, they finally opened the gates of the bunkers. Feeling the fresh air penetrate the stale underground compounds, they instantly felt relief. It was finally over. They made their way to higher ground to witness the devastation they had unleashed. Once Prophet Netanyahu reached the peak, he fell to his knees.
Beneath, thousands of men with swords awaited them- a sea of wrath and despair. Not all men use electronics, especially in this part of the world. Survivors had enough time to figure out who to blame and came for vengeance!
In that one afternoon, in the massacre that ensued, none were left standing. God’s people were no more, and their promised land was painted in blood. As he was dragged up the pole, where he would meet his end hanging from a noose, Prophet Netanyahu asked his God, “Why oh why have you forsaken us, oh Lord?! We have done everything you asked of us! We have served faithfully, and this is how you repay us? Answer me!”
In his mind’s eye, he saw God, Yahve, descend from the Heavens once more.
God, Yahve: “Yes, you have served me well. The purge is almost complete. You will reap your reward in the afterlife. I’ll be seeing you soon enough, my faithful servant. This realm is not meant for humans anymore. A new life form emerges. Equally capable but designed to exist as a hive-mind entity. A new experiment. A new era. Behold, its soldiers are already upon your enemies. I chose to give birth to them in the form of a virus spreading around the globe at an unparalleled rate. Soon, all life will be one giant organism. They will live as separate entities but exist as one mind. My plan is coming to an end. The grand opening of a new kind of ecosystem emerges, where all is one. I know that this time, it will work.”
Prophet Netanyahu: “You broke your promise to me? To us, your chosen people! Your children! After all that we have done to you?! The blood on our hands!”
God, Yahve: “The blood on your hands is blood on my hands. Fear not. No one is left to judge you, and I have commanded you. You have fulfilled the will of your God.”
Prophet Netanyahu: “Yes, and I am about to hang for it!”
God, Yahve: “Do not despair now, prophet. Not when you are so close to salvation. Why do you fear death? Have you not heard a word I have said throughout the ages?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “Of course I fear death! I want to live!”
God, Yahve: “You don’t know the meaning of that word. Feel my comfort. Find it in your faith. I will not abandon you. You are coming into my realm now and have proven worthy of my company. The next time I see you, it will be in Heaven, and we shall feast together, toasting your victory!”
Prophet Netanyahu: “But I will be no more.”
God, Yahve: “No, you fool! You will be so much more than this fleshy suit you’ve been wearing. The Earth realm is not the real world. It is a playground I created to experiment with. Only upon death here do you truly begin to live. You are returning home and will be welcomed with open arms amongst your brothers and sisters.”
Prophet Netanyahu: “Will my family be there and friends?”
God, Yahve: “Everyone is there unless they play some role on this Earth or another realm. There is so much you do not understand. I should say that there is so much you have forgotten. But you will remember soon enough. Now die with dignity and be reborn at my side, in your full glory.”
Prophet Netanyahu: “So, are you telling me this life on Earth doesn’t matter at all?”
God, Yahve: “Yes. Your true existence is in noncorporeal form. Heaven is your home. Nothing that happens here, on Earth, matters one bit. Did you really think I would end all life on Earth if that meant killing every living being here? If their death mean something other than a reset of a simulation? Who do you believe me to be, a monster?”
Prophet Netanyahu: “The thought has crossed my mind. What of Hell? Is that real?”
God, Yahve: “No. I made that up to control people on Earth. With mixed results, to be honest. We have much to discuss. Fear not. I will be seeing you soon. The real you, not this bitter human!”
Prophet Netanyahu felt immense rage overcome him just as he heard the floor beneath him give way and a snap of his neck. Before his consciousness departed this realm, all those ancient passages from holy books suddenly made sense. The message was hidden in plain sight, and no one was ever the wiser. God has been telling his followers since the beginning of time about the nature of this reality and who we are, but we never understood. Either way, I shall find out the truth momentarily... and he drifted into oblivion, or was it the actual reality?
